Art Work #4"Perfect Imperfections"
|
For my fourth art piece, I was inspired by Art Nuveo. I like the art form's intricate designs and colors. My subject is portrayed as a Barbie. The title is meant to be contridict what Barbie is all about and that is beauty and perfetion. In the media we see images of women who are considered the "ideal women." A lot of these images are photoshopped and air brushed to make the models look thinner and almost doll like. For someone that has struggled with self esteem issues, this piece was personal to me. As a girl, I played with Barbies and thought of her as my idol. I wanted to be Barbie, the pretty blonde hair with pink lips and cream skin. In my artwork I tried to emphasize how much girls focus on appearance with the use of a makeup brush and lip stick border. The title "Perfect Imperfecitons" derives from the girls not so perfect features. I made her skin seem almost rough and tanned and hair tangled. The lipstick border has lipsticks going in all different directions which adds to the chaos and imperfection of the piece. The hardest part of this was probably working with acrylic on the wooden board. Due to the surface's smooth texture, my brush strokes were never clean and precise. This frustrated me a bit because I really wanted clean coats of paint. Now that I think of it though, my own artist imperfections tie in with the overall theme of the painting.
For my last and final work in the series, I chose to do a photography piece. I had a friend of mine take pictures of me holding a cow skull in front of my face. This gave the appearance that my face was in fact a cow skull. Luckily for me, my face fit perfectly in the back part of the skull so little effort was needed to hold it up.
After taking a couple of shots I chose the ones I liked the best and proceeded to edit them accordingly. I changed the color to black and white and shifted the brightness and contrast to create an eary glow. |
Art Work #5 Woman in Swaddling Clothes:"Paesent Fashion"My 5th artwork was inspired by the barouque painting "Girl with the Pearl Earring," by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. I Liked vermeers suttle look and use of simple colors. The neuatral background helps make the blue and yellow colors pop. For my painting, I wanted to show beauty in a different light. The women I painted is not one to be thought of as beautiful. Unlike the woman in the original baroque painting, my subject lacks color and emotion in the face. Despite her "ugly" appearance, she wears a headwrap and dress made of the finest materials. The headwrap and dress incoorperate cultural aspects. This is how I began to think of my work as a fashion piece. Often society is quick to judge others on their appearance. I wanted to draw attention to what she was wearing rather than her face and expression. My goal was to show that all people are able to wear high-end fashion no matter what their financial status may be. My only problem was the blending part of the face. I didn't want to use too grey of a color or too warm of a color in the face, because that would draw focus to her face rather than the fabric she is wearing.
